At Orchard Therapeutic Care, we offer a safe, secure and nurturing environment for 16 and 17-year-olds with complex emotional, social and mental health needs. Our small care-supported living homes are designed to provide comprehensive semi-independent and 24-hour supervised living services for Looked After Children and Care Leavers, ensuring they receive the support they need during this crucial period of their lives.
We firmly believe that by equipping young people with the necessary skills, resources and support, we significantly enhance their chances of flourishing and building a successful future as they transition toward independence. Through personalised care and a holistic approach, we strive to help them overcome past challenges, build resilience and develop confidence for the future.
Our homes are located in Oxfordshire and offer both dual and group placements. Many of our homes are situated in semi-rural areas, creating a calm and peaceful environment where young people can focus on healing and managing trauma. This environment provides the perfect setting for reflection and personal growth, away from the distractions and pressures of urban life.
Each home is run by a team of dedicated professionals who work hard to create a welcoming, therapeutic and comfortable environment. These teams are committed to providing the kind of nurturing care that many of the young people we support may not have experienced before. Our approach is designed to offer consistency, stability and a sense of belonging, empowering young people to feel secure as they navigate the challenges of growing up.
We understand that part of the healing process involves fostering fun and enjoyable experiences. Our teams ensure that young people not only receive high-quality care but also engage in activities that promote well-being, personal development and social integration. Activities in the home include arts and crafts, cooking, football matches and yoga, giving young people the opportunity to express themselves and develop new skills. We also organise outdoor trips to local parks, zoos, museums, as well as holidays around the UK and, where appropriate, abroad. These experiences allow young people to build lasting memories, enhance their social skills and, most importantly, develop their independence.
When a young person is referred to us, our placement team works closely with their social worker, local authority and our therapeutic staff to ensure they are matched with the most suitable home. We consider the young person’s individual needs, background and preferences to find the best possible fit. Before a young person moves in, they will have the opportunity to meet their home manager and support team, helping to facilitate a smooth transition. This process ensures that the young person feels comfortable and confident before their move, setting the foundation for a successful stay.
We recognise that the experiences young people face in their early lives significantly shape their behaviours and resilience. That’s why our homes and therapeutic approach are designed to provide stability, tailored care and continuous support. Our staff are trained to understand the impact of adverse childhood experiences on emotional and social development. We work to ensure that each individual receives the care they need to address their specific challenges, while also offering the tools and strategies they need to develop independent living skills and resilience for future challenges.
Our supported living services are specifically designed for young people who aspire to live independently but require support to do so. These services offer tailored packages of support that help young people manage daily tasks, enhance their life skills and gain the confidence they need to take on more responsibility. These placements are ideal for young people who are transitioning from residential care or foster placements and wish to take the next steps toward independence.
We collaborate closely with local authorities, care professionals and housing providers to create personalised support packages based on each young person’s individual needs. This ensures that every young person receives the right level of support and guidance as they move forward in their journey.
When a young person joins one of our homes, they are welcomed by a dedicated keyworker and co-keyworker who will guide them through the induction process. During this period, they will be introduced to the facilities, including fire exits, assembly points and kitchen amenities. They will also meet their new housemates and be shown to their room, where they will have their own designated space in the kitchen for personal items. To ease the transition, each young person will receive a welcome pack containing a brochure and personal care items.
Together with their key worker, the young person will review the house rules, complete a risk assessment and begin to settle into their new home. Throughout their stay, young people are encouraged to follow the house guidelines and raise any concerns through our straightforward complaints procedure. Whether it’s about accommodation, services or experiences of harassment, we are here to support and resolve any issues. We aim to foster independence by guiding young people to resolve conflicts, providing extra support where necessary, and helping them build the confidence to face challenges.
At Orchard Therapeutic Care, we view our young people as part of our extended family. Every year, we organise an exciting international trip to show our appreciation and trust. These trips serve multiple purposes:
These trips provide not just the enjoyment of travel but also the opportunity to learn and grow in a safe, supportive environment.
Our homes are designed to feel like a haven for young people. They are safe, cosy and comfortable, offering a welcoming atmosphere where young people can feel at ease. Each young person has a private single-occupancy bedroom, providing them with the personal space they need for reflection and rest.
Our homes are equipped with:
We want young people to feel at home in our spaces, and our kitchens and communal areas are equipped to support their independence:
To ensure a smooth transition into our homes, our home and therapeutic teams work closely with each young person’s social worker. Together, we determine the best time for the transition, ensuring that each placement is a suitable match for the young person’s needs. Our collaborative approach helps create a seamless progression towards greater independence, social integration and emotional well-being. With the right support and a nurturing environment, young people can thrive and move forward with confidence and resilience.
