Case Study 3: James

In the Beginning

James* is a 16-year-old boy who arrived at our care home after his previous care placement broke down. He came to us feeling disoriented, disconnected, and unsure of his future. His past instability had left him struggling with trust and engagement, especially when it came to education and forming new relationships.

James's Journey with OTF

Upon joining our home, James began receiving 8 hours of one-on-one support each week. The initial focus was on helping him rebuild a sense of routine and stability in a safe and understanding environment. Our team worked closely with James to offer emotional support, encouraging him to express his feelings and concerns. Slowly, his reluctance to engage started to fade.

One of the key turning points for James was his introduction to Orchard Therapeutic Farm (OTF). There, he began working towards qualifications while gaining hands-on work experience in a calm, supportive setting. Initially hesitant, James gradually grew comfortable working with the animals and taking part in various farm activities. The peaceful, structured environment helped him develop a sense of responsibility and purpose.

In addition to his time at the farm, James started focusing on practical skills that would help him transition into adulthood. With the guidance of our team, he began to set personal goals for his education and future career. His engagement in farm tasks and learning activities helped him rebuild his confidence, and he now shows an eagerness to attend the farm regularly, enjoying the combination of structured learning and hands-on experience.

James's Story

James’ journey is still unfolding, but the progress he’s made is encouraging. He has become more open to learning, building positive relationships with his peers and staff, and is beginning to see a future where he can succeed both academically and personally.
