  • Our Therapeutic Model

At Orchard Therapeutic Care, our therapeutic model is rooted in the principles of Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy (DDP), which offers a research-informed framework for supporting young people with complex emotional and relational needs. Central to our approach is the PACE model, developed by renowned American psychologist Dr Dan Hughes. PACE—an acronym for Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity, and Empathy—provides a way of thinking, feeling, communicating, and behaving that fosters safety and connection. This model reflects the natural ways in which nurturing parents interact with their children during early development, promoting trust, security, and emotional growth.

    Playfulness

We aim to create a fun, light-hearted, and relaxed atmosphere where young people can develop positive relationships. Playful interactions help them experience joy and ease, reinforcing the idea that temporary conflicts or separations are not threats to their relationships. Through play, we build bridges of trust and connection, enabling young people to explore their emotions and develop resilience.

    Acceptance

Acceptance is at the heart of everything we do. We provide unconditional positive regard, ensuring that young people feel valued and understood for who they are, without fear of judgement or rejection. By accepting their inner selves—including their feelings, thoughts, and behaviours—we create an environment where they feel secure and free to grow in confidence and self-worth.

    Curiosity

Curiosity enables us to delve deeper into a young person’s inner world, seeking to understand the motivations and experiences that shape their behaviour, relationships, and interactions. Instead of reacting to behaviour, we ask, "What might this mean?" This approach fosters meaningful connections, as young people feel truly heard and seen. It also empowers them to reflect on their emotions and experiences in a supportive environment.

    Empathy

Empathy allows us to meet young people where they are emotionally. We strive to understand their feelings and experiences, recognising the challenges they face and the strength it takes to navigate them. By offering compassionate support and understanding, we communicate that their emotions are valid and that they are not alone. Empathy builds trust and enables young people to feel safe enough to express themselves openly.

This holistic application of PACE supports our mission to provide therapeutic care that nurtures healing, growth, and independence. By combining these principles with a deep understanding of attachment and trauma, we help young people develop the emotional tools they need to build stronger relationships, achieve personal goals, and thrive in their journey toward independence.
